Although the song was written by Donna Weiss and Jackie DeShannon, and was originally performed by Jackie DeShannon on her “New Arrangement” album in 1974, it wasn’t until Kim Carnes’s version of Bette Davis Eyes that the song climbed the charts.
Bette Davis, who was 73 years old at the time, loved the song as much as I did. She sent letters to all three women, thanking them for making her relevant again in the eighties. She was especially pleased that her grandson then looked at her in awe. When the song won both the Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year, she sent them roses as well.
Carnes and Davis struck up a special friendship, with the singer visiting her at her home several times before Davis’s death in 1989. In what she considers a career highlight, Carnes performed the song live for Davis at a tribute to the legendary actress held just before her death
Listen to Kim and tell me if she doesn’t evoke Bette Davis with her words…
