An Introduction to Simon Ronistan

He and his wife had lived in the Colorado mountains near Beaver Creek, isolated from the ongoing conflict between vampires and werewolves. Married two years, the arrival of their son had been both a blessing and a worry. Protecting them had become his sole purpose in life. Fate had struck him hard, taken from him everything that mattered. He blamed himself most over the years, believing he should have taken more care. How could a simple car accident bring about their end?

The day had been crisp, fall having arrived early that year. While Simon repaired a stretch of fence along the border of their property, Sarah had strapped Wade into his car seat, took her place behind the wheel, waving a final goodbye, and took off for the market. The next time he saw them was to identify their bodies, after that Simon retreated into his mind, refusing to acknowledge they were gone. It had taken his sister to force him to go to their funeral, to watch their coffins being lowered into the frozen ground.

Meeting Laurent – His Fellow Council Member

Some ten years later, alone, living like a hermit, Laurent, a leader amongst the vampires, had found him. Simon had sensed the vampire approaching from miles away. He waited for his time on earth to end, seated in his disorderly living room, in the dark, so he could join his family. Laurent had other ideas. He did not come to harm, let alone kill, Simon. His purpose was to bring him into the light. Simon remembered Laurent’s words as if it were yesterday. Though at the time he spoke not one word of French, Laurent was happy to translate.

Quand on n’a pas ce que l’on aime, il faut aimer ce que l’on a.

“When we have not what we love, we must love that which we have.” His French-accented words were said gently, understanding how Simon may react to them.

Simon boiled over in anger, resenting the words, Laurent’s presence and the fact that Laurent knew anything about his life. Angry words poured out of him, insults were flung at the vampire and his fists landed everywhere he could reach. Laurent took the abuse stoically, refusing to respond in kind or leave. Simon spent days trying to ignore his presence. Laurent made himself at home, cleaning the place top to bottom, rearranging pictures and even cooking meals for Simon. Keeping out of the way, Simon barred himself in his bedroom. Patiently, as if dealing with an adolescent teenager, Laurent waited for his final act.
